Well I must be immature because I find Plush-o-rama: Curious Creatures for Immature Adults hysterical and completely charming. The book includes projects for monsters, creatures with tentacles and third eyes, star shapes, cushions with teeth, octopus, gremlins, a cross between a pig and a duck, a “catzilla” and a bipolar cloud.
Apparently monster plushes are a growing trend. You can find then in art shops and even in museums. I love the creative aspects of these projects. They are truly one of a kind creatures.
Each project has an example creature with their own name and background stories and personality. Descriptions of basic materials and tools that you will need are included. There really aren’t any specialty items needed. Basic directions for sewing are provided. The sewing can be done on hand or with a machine. There are even directions for how to felt a wool sweater. Felt is a great material, but you can use any kind of fabric, scraps, old ties, or old clothes for these creatures. Many options for stuffing are included as well as a multitude of ideas for embellishments (fur, buttons, silk flowers).
I do think I’d share the creatures with children though, at least some of them. And I would break out the needle and thread and see what kind of creatures the kids can come up with. The author, Linda Kopp, says these are “not the toys of well adjusted children” that they are “more like what your childish imagination envisioned lying in wait beneath your bed, or hunkered in the unsettling shadows of your closet.” Some are a bit on the weird side, but that’s part of their charm. Some look those mixed up toys in Toy Story. But you don’t have to make them that weird. And some are very cute.
The index includes biographies of the creative designers behind the projects.
