The Prince and Me (2004)

paigeJulia Stiles stars in “The Prince and Me” as Paige, a pre-med student at the University of Wisconsin. She’s concentrating diligently on her studies and doesn’t have time for a relationship.

Meanwhile, Prince Edvard of Denmark (Luke Mably) is setting the castle on its ear. He’s a wild child, not ready to slow down and embrace the role that is his. He loves fast cars, fast women, and combining the two is his idea of a good time.

While watching TV one day, Edvard, also known as Eddie, sees a T-shirt contest being held at the University of Wisconsin. Mistakenly believing that this type of thing happens all the time at college, he tells his parents that he’s ready to go out in the world and start becoming responsible. He’ll begin this transformation with a year at college, and he’s chosen Wisconsin as his target.

Predictably, he meets up with Paige, and unpredictably, asks her when she’s going to take off her shirt. She throws a drink on him, and thus begins a friendship that eventually branches out into love. Through Paige, Eddie learns that life has to be taken seriously and that we have to work hard for what we want. Through Eddie, Paige learns to appreciate the moments of joy and to look for the fun that can be found everywhere.

When Eddie’s true identity is revealed, he’s suddenly the focus of all the media attention, and although he and Paige are engaged now, she doesn’t know if she can take the pressure of the paparazzi. What’s even worse – she doesn’t think she can give up her dream of becoming a doctor to become a queen. As these two decide their fate, they realize that no matter what happens between them, they’ll always be better off for having known each other.

A slightly saccharine love story, there were enjoyable moments, although Eddie really is a jerk when he first arrives in America. After I survived the first several minutes of his attitude, I found myself liking the movie.

This film was rated PG.
