Who needs ice and snow when you’ve got sparkle and shine?
Dallas is not known for snow-covered sidewalks, but the city certainly doesn’t lack the Christmas spirit thanks in large part to upscale retail giant Neiman Marcus.
As I continue my series of blogs spotlighting department store window displays I am turning my attention from the Big Apple to the Big D—Dallas. The city is home to Neiman Marcus’s flagship store and the windows at the downtown location are traditionally one of the most visited spots in the entire state during the holiday season.
This year the store is treating visitors to glittery reflections of holiday bling. Loosely translated: expect to see a ton of sequined dresses reflecting off a mirrored background. The windows themselves are also reflective—-decked out with lots of festive lights and sparkly decorations.
The shiny décor is a tribute to Neiman Marcus’s 100th anniversary. According to store window designers, the theme of this year’s display is “Look into the Future.” If you make the trip downtown expect a lot of company. Store managers say the sidewalks outside the building have been packed with shoppers and those who just want to take advantage of the free holiday event.
The displays feature large circular cutouts in dark window coverings from which viewers can sneak peeks of icy shimmer — from the mannequins’ stark white hair to their glittering dresses to the lights bouncing off the revolving mirrored balls overhead. Even the store’s Christmas tree is sporting a futuristic look. The 16-foot “tree” is made from chrome-plated circles that rotate as a “family” of three robotic arms rearranges the black bulbs with yellow polka dots, which cover it and three smaller “trees” of chrome next to it.
But Neiman Marcus is far from the only store in town decked out in its holiday best. Popular malls including NorthPark Center and Galleria Dallas are shimmering for the season as well. The Galleria recently put up its traditional 95-foot tall Christmas tree with lights that “dance” to music in the middle of its skating rink and the popular puppet puppet theater featuring Scrooge has returned to NorthPark.
