Celebrate the Holidays in Rhode Island

Now that you know where to stay in Newport, Rhode Island during the winter months let’s discuss what types of family friendly activities are available for you to participate in when you get there.

First, eliminate the misconception that the beach capital is a summer-only hot spot. Around the holidays the area is hopping with events such as the Christmas in Newport festival. The public party runs throughout December and showcases special events like concerts, caroling, and historic lantern tours nearly every day. If you are traveling to the city specifically for the festival you should know that there are a number of winter getaway packages that combine one or two nights at one of 40 lodging properties, including the Legendary Inns (with vouchers for area activities and a coupon book) still available.

The Christmas Festival attracts thousands to the area, but perhaps the most popular winter draw is Newport’s legendary mansions, which deck their halls in holiday splendor during the months of December and January. And thanks to the Preservation Society’s Winter Passport program, you don’t have to be a paying guest to get a peek inside. Simply fork over $25 and you’ll get daytime admission to The Breakers, Marble House, and The Elms where you can take in the spectacular holiday decorations and enjoy choral concerts and dance performances.

Other holiday options include taking in local productions of the Nutcracker or traveling back in time with in-character Victorian Christmas tours offered by various inns. Regardless of what activity you partake in, rest assured the townsfolk will help you get in the holiday spirit.

What’s more, Newport is an easy drive from many cities in the Northeast, including New York and Boston. If you are looking to fly, the closest major airports are T.F. Green State Airport in Providence and Boston’s Logan Airport.
