A couple of days ago, my kids and I were discussing whether we would have a white Christmas or not. It is almost uncanny how we often have just a touch of snow for Christmas, like icing on a cake. Then, we learned that we might actually get some snow this weekend.
My little one jumped up and down yesterday morning asking, “Is it gonna snow? Is it? Is it?” I had to wonder what kind of weather we might expect. It’s been rather mild except for the occasional harsh day or night. However, when I stopped in the store last night for bread and the shelves were nearly bare, I was left asking, “Is it? Is it?” too.
No bread is a sure sign of snow (or some kind of weather) “in these here parts.” With even a hint of snow, ice, or bitterly cold weather, bread and milk fly off the shelves.
The other day when I saw Mary Ann’s first snow story, I have to admit, I was a little jealous. I’m kind of looking forward to the first snowfall (despite the fact that if we get more than enough to make things pretty, it basically closes down the general area). But, a little snow would be nice, just a gentle blanketing of white stuff, enough to make the countryside shimmer and sparkle.
That’s the way I like it – enough to play in and take some pictures, but not enough to close down town.
As Christmas carols played in the background, I walked through the store grabbing essentials, like hot cocoa. I picked up a bag of salt too, for the stairs, just in case. The cashier said I’d be needing the salt and suggested another bag. She told my kids they’d be needing the hot chocolate, from what she’d been hearing.
People you don’t even know will give you reminders at the store (don’t forget to get milk before it’s all gone!) and “neighbors” who live miles away, and only know each other in passing, will check in to make sure everyone is okay. It’s a comforting feeling knowing that people care about those around them. The best part is it’s like that here all year, not just during the holidays.
So, I do hope we get a little snow (just not too much, because I still have Christmas shopping to do!).
If the Weather outside is frightful…
