Brookfield Zoo

My husband and I took our kids to Brookfield Zoo in Brookfield, Illinois last summer. Neither of us had been there since we were kids, and we couldn’t wait to show it to our children. While the Zoo is beginning to show its age, it is still a welcoming place.

The guide explained that male lions literally sleep up to 23 out of 24 hours each day, but we were lucky to see the resident lion wake up and walk around the day we were there. We could hear his roar from quite some distance and it was amazing.

We didn’t think we were going to get to see the tiger living at Brookfield, but just as the Zoo was closing, he peaked from behind a large rock. He was fascinating. A huge creature, but shy nonetheless. He was new to the Zoo and would not come all the way out of his hiding spot, but we were glad we got to see him and take some pictures.

The bears were playful and adorable, especially the polar bears. After seeing them, we wandered over to the Children’s Zoo where visitors are allowed to pet the animals. There was everything from roosters, cows, and goats, to a bald eagle (we didn’t get to pet him but he was awesome). Then we went to the dolphin show, which the kids adored.

The Children’s Zoo does cost extra, as does the Dolphin Show, the Motor Tram, the Family Play Zoo and assorted other features, but we took our family of six to Brookfield Zoo from the time it opened until the time it closed for around $100.00. The best way to do it is to purchase specially discounted passes that include the exhibits you wish to see.

It’s also a good idea to bring your own drinks and lunch (it is allowed) as these items are rather expensive, and you’ll probably want to save your money for souvenirs. You can even rent a wagon to carry your belongings… or your kids.

If you are in Illinois or planning a trip there, try to check out Brookfield Zoo. There are of course zoos in other areas as well, and if you or your kids have never been to one, you should go. Seeing the animals that close and personal is definitely an experience.
