Working on Christmas Day

I confess it…I admit the truth…I really do work a bit on Christmas Day…does that make me a greedy Scrooge?

The fact is, my kids spend Christmas with their father and his family and for the past few years, I have been alone on the actual holiday. I don’t travel since I see most of my extended family either before or after Christmas, and I haven’t been involved with anyone for years so Christmas Day is generally a pretty quiet day for me. I spend it cleaning up after a bustly week and our Christmas Eve family celebrations, thinking about getting organized for the new year, and, yes, working…

It is hard to feel guilty for taking advantage of a quiet house and plenty of uninterrupted time. After all, there really isn’t anywhere I can go–no bookstores are open or restaurants to sip coffee and read a magazine in. I suppose I could stay in bed but that really isn’t my style or temperament–so work it is. And it is usually a rather pleasant, productive day for me work-wise.

It is not as if I strap myself to my desk and count all my golden coins–it is a more leisurely work day where I sip coffee, take breaks to make a turkey sandwich or rummage around for some cookies, and I don’t even get to my desk until after I have hauled out all the garbage and recycling and taking my annual single parent Christmas walk. Still, I confess I do work, officially. In many ways it does just feel like another typical work day–but for someone who works at home, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. After all, I have worked to make my home business feel integrated into the every day responsibilities and realities of my life anyway and even though it is Christmas, it can be another work day too.
