New Year’s Resolution: Your Marriage

Your marriage is a very important thing. You should constantly be working to maintain and improve this relationship. When you are juggling the stress of your job, your children and church callings, it can be too easy to put your marital relationship on the back burner. It is vital that you take the time each day to strengthen your relationship with each other. Here are four habits that you can bring you closer in the new year.

1) You can work with your spouse to grow together spiritually. You can have couple prayer, study the scriptures together and attend the temple together on a regular basis. These habits will help strengthen both of your testimonies and help you to continue down the same path.

2) You can work to parent together more effectively. This can be done through family planning sessions, in which you discuss the children, activities for the week and finances. These weekly meetings do not need to be very long, but they can help to reduce the stress and tension of the week. It also allows you time to discuss concerns about how to address family problems without the children there.

3) You can strive to get to know each other better. You can always learn something more about your spouse, even after being married together for years. You can read your spouse’s favorite book, or learn how to do his favorite hobby. You may decide to read a new book together and discuss it, to learn the different viewpoints that you each have. Spending time talking on a regular basis can help as well.

4) You should be dating on a regular basis. This is a time when you can connect with each other. It is one of the most important things you can do to strengthen your marriage. If you can only go out once a month you should still make time to do it. If you can not afford a babysitter, considering forming a co-op so that you can still go out.
