Fending Off Job Offers

I was talking with a friend of mine recently who I hadn’t seen in a while–the last I had spoken with him, he was starting his own consulting business. He confessed that he had been lured away from his fledgling business by a tempting job offer and now was regretting that he hadn’t stuck it out just a while longer. I think this can be a hazard or a reality for many home business owners–it can be tough to stick to building a struggling home business when there is the promise of better pay and benefits (at least for the short term) if we just go back to working for someone else.

I have had clients want to “bring me on staff” too–it seems that they like the work one does, but really want to have more say, control and, perhaps they might think it will be more economical. For us, it can be incredibly appealing to go back to the safety and security of the traditional job. OR, we might tell ourselves that we will take the traditional job offer, and still keep working at our home businesses “on the side”–we end up working all of the time and juggling a lot of stress.

I am not saying that individuals should NOT take a great job if that is what you really, truly want. But if your heart of hearts is telling you to build your home business, you may live to regret giving up so soon. If you have been struggling at your business for a long time, losing interest, or really need the money–those could be good reasons for taking a job offer, but if you really want to focus on your business and make a good go of it, it takes courage and faith to say “no” to those tempting and potentially lucrative job offers.
