Even though it seems as if you finally just got all the Christmas decorations organized and put away, it might be time to pull some of them back out… I was given a heart shaped glass dish for Christmas. It looked nice filled with tiny, shiny ornaments, but it will also be pretty when filled with heart shaped candies for Valentine’s Day.
That red tablecloth, red doilies, gold placemats, and metallic stars can all add to your Valentine’s Day decorating. Metallic items look great with red. Those star shaped decorations will work too, because stars and hearts work together.
I especially like gold with red and adding some black can be very dramatic. A monochromatic red color scheme can be compelling and elegant as well.
Texture is good too. It helps add to the romantic feeling. Silk, satin, velvet… all in red.
If you prefer something more whimsical, think balloons. From a ceiling covered with helium filled balloons trailing metallic ribbon strings to balloon bouquets, they can add some color and sparkle to your Valentine’s Day plans.
Help the kids make placemats by gluing little Valentines together or gluing them to paper, cardboard, or fabric for a backing (be sure to pick up extras on sale after Valentine’s Day for next year’s placemats).
Incorporate some goodies into your design. Those heart shaped boxes and candies can be used to decorate. And, what would Valentine’s Day be without flowers? Real or artificial, you can create a great flower arrangement or centerpiece to bring the love to any surface.

I don’t tend to go all out, having just packed up Christmas, but I generally do a little something. It can be as simple as a red tablecloth and some candles, but I do like to add a few special touches.
