The second lesson in our Gospel Doctrine course this year is called “All Things According to His Will” and focuses on Lehi’s departure, with his family, into the wilderness. Our recommended reading is:
1 Nephi 1:4-15, 18-20, 2:1-3: What circumstances led to Lehi’s departure into the wilderness?
1 Nephi 1:19-20, 2:12-13, 16:1-2, also 1 Nephi 2:16, 19: Why were the people so reluctant to hear the words of Lehi and the other prophets who had been sent to teach repentance to them? Why are people so filled with pride that when they are called upon to repent, they become angry and murderous? How does this reflect on our situation today, and how can we remain teachable?
1 Nephi 3:3, 19-20, 4:15-16, also 1 Nephi 5:21-22, Mosiah 1:3-7: What was the significance of the brass plates, and why was it so important for Lehi’s family to obtain them?
The manual encourages us to think about the differences in temperament between Nephi and Laman and Lemuel. How are they different? How do they accept correction and teaching? Do they become prideful and angry, or do they accept what they are being taught? How does this apply to us?
As we study the need for the brass plates, we can liken this to our own genealogy and our own scriptures. Are we sufficiently grateful to have those precious records in our own lives? Are we working to complete our genealogies, and are we working on a journal or family history? Those items may someday be as precious to our descendants as the brass plates were to Lehi’s family.
The manual also suggests that we increase our appreciation for the Book of Mormon by finding people to share it with. Copies are available inexpensively, and as we give away the book and share our testimony of it, those testimonies will grow, as well as our gratitude that it was given to us in our time.
