Movies Week in Review: January 21st-January 26th

We had a great week in Movie Reviews. In case you missed it, here’s a recap.

The Nanny Diaries” is a cute film about a girl who finds herself at loose ends for work and takes a job as a nanny out of desperation. She finds herself the only sane person in the midst of dysfunction and learns more about human nature than she ever thought possible.

Moonstruck” is the tale of true love found just a little too late and what one man will do to win the heart of the woman he loves. A great story, wonderful acting – all in all, a winner of a film.

In “Runaway Bride,” we meet a woman who doesn’t really know what she wants out of life. She keeps trying to find herself by attaching herself to a fiancé, but it’s only when she comes face to face with herself that she learns why she keeps running, and the race is over and won.

Walk the Line” is the emotional look into the life of Johnny Cash, from his descent into addiction to his rise into recovery as aided by his religious beliefs and by the woman who would become his wife, June Carter.

The Wedding Planner” is a light-hearted, pleasant film about a planner who falls in love with the fiancé of one of her clients, not realizing that’s who he is. This film isn’t excellent, but it’s not terrible, either.

Born Yesterday” is the shrill original to the film later made famous by Melanie Griffith. Judy Holliday is our star in this version, playing a mobster’s fiancé who needs a little smartening up.

The Phantom of the Opera” is the breathtaking Hollywood version of the Webber Broadway masterpiece. A beautiful film that will give you chills.

Ladyhawke” is one of my favorite romantic movies of all time. A man is cursed to be a wolf at night and a man by day, while his true love is a hawk by day and a woman at night. They can never be together unless they can come up with a way to break the spell.

Blast from the Past” is a fun movie about a family who goes to live in their underground bunker, thinking they have been hit by an atomic bomb. When they come to the surface again thirty-five years later, they are amazed at all the changes that have taken place. I encourage you to read the full review for content warnings.

We end the week with a look at “Showdown,” a western-romance starring Rock Hudson and Dean Martin.

We hope you can join us again here in Movie Reviews. Happy movie watching!
