The SAG Awards

There were some stars on the red carpet last night for the Screen Actor Guild Awards. The ceremony was given a waiver by the writer’s guild, so unlike the Golden Globes, the show did go on with the stylish glitz we have come to expect from an award’s ceremony.

Debra Messing did not win the Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries (for “The Starter Wife”), but dazzle the crowd with her Oscar de la Renta jeweled halter-top gown. Christina Applegate, nominated for Female Actor in a Comedy Series (she did not win – the award went to Tina Fey for “30 Rock”), wore a silvery gown by Elie Saab, saying, “We don’t know if we get to wear our dresses anywhere else.”

I was a bit surprised that Cate Blanchett did not win the Female Actor in a Supporting Role award for her role as Bob Dylan in I’m Not There. It seems that all the award buzz I have read has pointed her way, but Ruby Dee won for her role in American Gangster. Despite the loss, Cate, who is pregnant, looked lovely in a navy strapless gown designed by Nicolas Ghesquiere for Balenciaga.

Despite the big designer names worn, there were also some new names featured. Angelina Jolie, who nuzzled with love Brad Pitt most of the night, wore Juliana Cairone. It was a beautiful gown, but there is little doubt the loose fit of it will have the trash mags saying she is pregnant again.

Angelina did not win the Female Actor in a Leading Role award – that went to Julie Christie for Away from Her. Other big winners of the night were Javier Bardem (Male Actor in a Supporting Role for No Country for Old Men), Charles Durning (Lifetime Achievement Award), and the cast of “The Sopranos,” with James Gandolfini winning Male Actor in a Drama Series, Edie Falco winning Female Actor in a Drama Series, and the show taking Ensemble in a Drama Series.

Two actors openly remembered Heath Ledger last night. Ryan Gosling wore a black ribbon in his label in honor of Heath. Daniel Day-Lewis, who won Male Actor in a Leading Role for There Will Be Blood dedicated his award to Heath, saying, “I admired him very much.”
