Dog Theme Birthday Party

If you’ve got a kid who loves dogs, you might want to throw a dog-themed birthday party for his or her next birthday. Buy stuffed animal dogs for favors, serve snacks like cereal mix in plastic dog dishes, blow up some balloons, add these games and cake, and you’ve got a party!

Cake: Puppy Cake

1. Bake two round cakes from a mix according to the package instructions. Let cool completely. Cut two ears and two circles for jowls out of one of the rounds. Set the whole round on a large plate or tray.

2. Frost the whole round with plenty of brown icing. Stick on the jowls and the ears and frost, also with plenty of icing.

3. To make the puppy look fluffy, press a butter knife into the icing and pull it straight up quickly. Do this all over the cake. Add jelly apple ring eyes and a jelly bean nose and eyeballs. Make a tongue out of string licorice.

Game: Walk the Dog

Divide the kids into pairs. Have them race wheelbarrow style (one kid gets on all fours and his partner stands behind him and lifts his legs so he is walking on his hands) to a finish line.

Game: Doggie Love

Have the kids sit in a circle. The first person says, “I love….” and then adds something a dog would like, such as “a bone.” The next person repeats what the first person said and then
adds something else, such as, “I love a bone and playing fetch.” The next person continues by repeating what the first two people said, then adding another thing to the list. Players are out if they don’t repeat the list correctly or forget an item.

Game: Chase the Cat

Time for an active game to get out the wiggles! Use one balloon for the cat, and one of a different color for the dog. Sit in a circle. Start passing the cat around the circle. when it is halfway around, start passing the dog around in the same direction. The goal is for the dog to catch the cat. The trick is that the person holding the cat when it is tagged is out. Also, if someone drops the cat, he or she is out.
