Have you ever taken a picture that was so stunningly gorgeous that you seriously thought of sharing it with the world… for a price?
More and more amateur photographers (many of whom have thought of going pro, but circumstances keep them from doing so) are turning to the Internet to make money off their shots.
The most popular online venues that pay for great pics are Micro Stock Photography websites. Microstock photography is an offshoot of traditional stock photography, which basically sells photos at deep discounts. The set up is simple: Clients license stock photos for a dollar or two, and photographers earn money each time someone chooses to use one of their photos.
There is a lot more to microstock photography than one blog could do justice (I plan to write follow ups in the coming days), but what is important to know is that for hobby photographers, microstock websites can be a great way to earn a second income. (After all, there’s nothing like getting paid for something you love to do.)
One of the benefits of getting involved in microstock photo sites is that once you’ve had one of your favorite shots accepted into a stock photography portfolio, you can continue making money off that one photo month after month. For the beginning photographer this is great incentive. What’s more, most microstock photography agencies make it fairly easy to get started. Entry requirements are not overly restrictive and many amateur photographers with have found the experience can be rewarding and profitable.
However, not everyone is a fan of microstock photography websites or the idea that photos are being sold at rock-bottom prices. Some feel it undermines the work of professional photographers who invest a lot of time and money on equipment, education, and photo shoots.
In my next blog I will provide tips on how you can start making money off your prize-winning shots via microstock agencies.
