Former Model Becomes France’s New First Lady

Well, we knew it was just a matter of time before they tied the knot…

And while many assumed they would wait until Valentine’s Day to get hitched it appears French President Nicolas Sarkozy and ex-supermodel turned singer-songwriter Carla Bruni couldn’t wait to make it legal.

According to French newspapers, Sarkozy and his ladylove exchanged wedding vows in a civil ceremony yesterday morning in Paris.

Just nine weeks after meeting the then newly divorced Sarkozy (he split from his former wife last October); Bruni now holds the title of first lady of France. Call her Mrs. Carla Bruni Sarkozy, after all that’s reportedly how the ravishing brunette signed her wedding certificate after her 20-minute vow exchange wrapped up in the Presidential Office of the Elysee Palace. According to news reports, the 53-year-old French President and the 39-year-old Italian-born Bruni were wed in an intimate ceremony attended by 30 family and friends.

The wedding party consisted of four bridesmaids as well as the couple’s respective mothers. Also in attendance was the bride’s actress sister, Bruni’s 6-year-old son from a previous marriage as well as Sarkozy’s children from his marriage to Cecilia Ciganer-Albeniz.

Other high profile guests included actor Vincent Perez, French businessman Francois Bazaire of the LMVH Groupe and Mathilde Agostinelli, communications officer for the Italian luxury goods firm Prada.

Bruni reportedly wore a white dress, and according to guests, looked “stunning as usual.”

Not surprising critics have already placed bets on how long this union will last.

This is the second marriage for Bruni, who dated Eric Clapton and Mick Jagger (among others) prior to meeting her new husband. Likewise, Sarkozy has been married and divorced twice before (heck, he just got out of his second marriage less than four months ago).

As for a honeymoon, reports say the newlyweds will likely postpone an official honeymoon until later this year, though palace officials say Bruni will accompany Sarkozy on a visit to Romania on Monday.
