If so, is he open about it or a closet chick flick fan? Or maybe a little of both?
Open Fans
One couple we’re friends with the husband actually seems to like chick flicks more than the wife. He’s not embarrassed at all about admitting he likes them.
In fact, he’ll turn the tables on any guy who tries to shame him for it. He’ll say things like, “You don’t know how many great movies you miss if you don’t give them a chance.” Or, “Don’t fault me for being in touch with my feminine side. You should try it. Might do you some good.”
Some of his favorite movies include The Phantom of the Opera, While You Were Sleeping, and Runaway Bride.
Closet Fans
Closet fans are hard to spot. Unless you’re married to or dating one and happen to catch them watching a chick flick, you’ll never know they like them.
None of my friends, being the good spouses they are, have ever narked on their husbands if they are married to one of these types. (And know it.) By virtue of their nature, I can’t even venture a guess what kinds of chick flicks appeal to such a man.
Little of Both Fans
Wayne falls into the little of both category. To me he’ll admit he likes them and even ask to see them. Especially if they’re romantic comedy chick flicks. (Fool’s Gold is currently on his list.)
But if anyone else was to ask him about it? He’d proceed with caution before admitting he has more than one fave. (Or that two of them don’t fall in the romantic comedy genre.)
His favorites include French Kiss, The Notebook, Sweet Home Alabama, and Atonement.
Go Easy
If your guy falls into either of the last two categories, but you want him to enter the Open Zone, you have to proceed with caution.
The most important thing to do is to let him know there’s nothing wrong with liking chick flicks. That means not teasing him about it. (Good grief! That’d be the quickest way to make him withdraw more.) Or pressing or pressuring him about admitting it.
If he’s not comfortable owning up to preferences, go easy. He might never come around. He might think he has an image to maintain.
That’s okay. Let him. You’ll know the truth.
