Balancing Your Needs and Your Family’s Needs

One of the most difficult things to do is juggle self-care with care for your family. I think that mothers particularly struggle with how to determine how much they should do to care for themselves before they take care of their children. It is important to make sure that your spirit, emotional and physical aspects of your life are cared for, but it is easy to become too focused on only your needs.

So how do you determine if you are making the right choices and finding the right balance? It really comes down to self-preservation and then caring for others. You need to take time study the scriptures and pray to strengthen yourself spiritually. It is important to realize that some days you may only have fifteen minutes to study other days you may be able to extend that time. You should remember that it is about balance.

When it comes to your emotional and physical health, it is also about balance. Sleep is an important part of being balance both emotionally and physically. Although some nights you may not have much control over the amount of sleep you get, you should make sure that you get a good night’s rest most nights. You should also take the time to eat well and exercise on a regular basis.

We are warned against selfishness, so when do you cross the line between caring for yourself and being selfish? If you become so absorbed in meeting your needs that you are neglecting the needs of your family, then you may need to adjust your priorities. Similarly though if you are so absorbed in your family’s needs, that you neglect to care for yourself, then you need to adjust your priorities. The key to happiness is finding the balance that works best for you and your family.
