Charity = Weight Loss

A great way to lose weight is to take walks for charity. I know I’ve mentioned this before but now I’m providing all the resources you’ll need to just click and walk!

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Light The Night Walk

The Light The Night Walk is an annual event to raise funds to support the work of researchers in their search for better therapies and cures for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Anyone can participate in the walk, even those who can’t walk yet! (My son rode in the stroller while I walked this one.)

Avon Walk for Breast Cancer

This is a big one. It is a two day and 39 mile walk. Participants in the Avon Walk provide the financial support for medically under-insured women and men to receive screening, support, and treatment.

March of Dimes March for Babies

This was previously called WalkAmerica. The purpose for the March for Babies is to support research to help save premature babies. Prematurity has escalated steadily over the past 20 years. According to the March of Dimes:

“In 2005, more than 525,000 infants were born prematurely, the highest number ever reported for the U.S. In 2005, the United States as a society paid at least $26.2 billion in economic costs associated with preterm birth (medical and educational expenses, loss in productivity).”

The March of Dimes is dedicated to finding out why children are born prematurely and to stop this very dangerous condition.

National Kidney Foundation Kidney Walk

Kidney disease causes wastes in the body to build to high levels in your blood. Complications include high blood pressure, anemia (low blood count), weak bones, poor nutritional health and nerve damage. It also increases the risk of heart disease. Early detection and treatment are the key and that is what the National Kidney Foundation is working for. Money raised goes to research on how to combat this deadly disease.

American Lung Association Asthma Walk

The American Lung Association is working to prevent lung disease and promote lung health. It was founded in 1904 to fight tuberculosis. Today it fights lung disease in all its forms, with an emphasis on asthma, tobacco control and environmental health. Contributions provided through the Asthma Walk make this possible.

National Multiple Sclerosis Society Walk MS

MS is an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (the brain, spinal cord, and the optic nerves). Donations provided through Walk MS provide for research on how to treat and cure this disease.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk to Cure Diabetes

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation funds and advocates for type 1 (juvenile) diabetes research worldwide. Their mission is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications.

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Great Strides

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. According to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation:

“A defective gene causes the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections and obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.”

About 1,000 new cases of cystic fibrosis are diagnosed each year. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is the driving force behind finding a cure.

American Diabetes Association Step Out to Fight Diabetes

Step Out to Fight Diabetes was formerly known as America’s Walk for Diabetes. The purpose of the walk is to raise funds to help find a cure for and raise awareness of diabetes. The American Diabetes Association funds research, publishes scientific findings, provides information to all those touched by diabetes as well as advocates for scientific research and for the rights of people with diabetes.

American Heart Association Heartwalk

The American Heart Association works to fight heart disease and stroke and raise awareness of both conditions.

I’ve listed ten great charities that have fundraising walks in major cities every year. Why not choose one and make a commitment to help a charity while working toward your own weight loss?
