“I Could Never Be Your Woman” is a sassy movie about an over-forty television writer named Rosie (Michelle Pfeiffer) who is looking for a new actor to fill in a spot on her show, “You Go Girl.” All the applicants are terrible until one young man walks in. His name is Adam (Paul Rudd) and he’s a natural. He’s quirky, he’s funny, and he gets the job. It’s not long until he’s stealing every scene he’s in, and he’s also stealing something else – Rosie’s heart.
He takes her to a club and his outrageous sense of humor is very attractive to her. But she hasn’t told him her age, and she doesn’t know his. When she finds out he’s only twenty-nine compared to her over-forty, she wants to call an end to the relationship, but the chemistry is there and she can’t help it – she just likes the guy.
However, her assistant, a jealous girl named Jeannie, dislikes all the attention Adam is paying to Rosie. She’s had issues with Rosie for a while, but now she finally has some ammunition. She goes about making things very complicated for the new couple, and Rosie finds herself acting even more adolescent than Adam.
One young star really steals the show. Her name is Saoirse Ronan, and she plays Rosie’s daughter Izzie. I thought for sure she was Clay Aiken’s little sister, but she’s not. What she is, though, is a great actress and singer. I think we’re going to be seeing a lot more of her.
If content is a concern, I will warn you that there are some sexual innuendos and flirtatious scenes. It’s not a movie I’d sit down and watch with my grandmother. However, with my grandmother safely tucked away, I enjoyed the film and thought the story was charming.
