Lose 20 Pounds of Fat in 30 Days

Timothy Ferriss, author of The 4-Hour Work Week, makes everything look possible. In fact, if you visit his website, you’ll see that he breaks it down and darned near anything is possible if you follow his example!

I haven’t yet tried his method of losing 20 pounds of fat in 30 days, although I should. (Pesky pregnancy fat plagues me.) Given his other ideas, I am inclined to think he may have some good ideas about how to do this so let’s take a look at his proposal, shall we?

He claims that, in the last six weeks, he has gone from 180 pounds to 165 pounds and added about 10 pounds of muscle, which works out to a loss of about 25 pounds of fat, using these four simple rules.

Rule #1: No white carbohydrates.

This makes sense to a starch addict like me. Just avoid anything that is, was or could be white like bread, rice, cereal, potatoes, pasta, popcorn, and anything fried in batter or breading.

Rule #2: Don’t vary your menu.

This makes sense too. If you don’t vary your menu much, you are less likely to get excited about eating and therefore consume a lot less. He suggests using the following three lists to create your meals by choosing one item from each list. (This method is quite similar to the Eating-for-Life method suggested by Bill Phillips in Body-for-Life.)

Proteins:

Egg whites (with one whole egg for flavor)

Chicken breast

Grass-fed organic beef

Pork

Legumes:

Lentils

Black beans

Pinto beans

Vegetables:

Spinach

Asparagus

Peas

Mixed vegetables

Ferriss says you can eat as much as you like so long as you choose the ingredients from the lists above and keep repeating the same meals. He recommends eating four times a day for convenience.

Rule #3: Don’t drink calories

I’ve mentioned this many times before. Too many of us drink too many of our calories. He suggests that you drink as much unsweetened iced tea, tea, diet soda, coffee (without white cream), or other no-calorie/low-calorie drinks as you want. Drinks like milk, fruit juice and soda are not to be consumed at all. His method does allow for at least one glass of wine each evening.

Rule #4: Take one day off every week

The Free Day is a major part of the Eating-for-Life plan and I have to say it is the best way that I’ve found to be able to stick with a program for a long period of time. Knowing that you have one day coming up when you can eat all the chocolate cake, potato chips and peanut butter that you like is a great motivational tool. This surge in calories also helps to keep your metabolism up instead of allowing it to slow down due to lack of calories.

So what do you think? Given what I know about nutrition and dieting, I’m heartily recommending this method and a visit to his website. It looks like a great plan for some major weight loss.

Come back and let me know if you give it a try!
