5 Reasons Traveling Light Can Save Money

If you can learn to travel light, you’ll save a lot of money. There are several ways that taking less with you on your adventures will give you a financial break. Consider pairing down your luggage to a carry on or lightening the load in your car. Here are the top five reasons that traveling light means a happy wallet.

1. You’ll save money in gas

Packing your car to the gills can be the normal thing to do when traveling, especially when you have kids. Kids have so much stuff, right? But the more pounds you pack in to the car, the more gas that car needs to get you where you are going. Reduce the amount of stuff you take and you’ll pay less at the gas pump.

2. You’ll save on cab fare

If you only have a carry on for your plane trip, you can save money on a cab to the airport. Taking a bus instead will be easy if you don’t have all of that luggage to carry around.

3. You’ll save on fees and tips

How much will you have to pay to hire someone to lug your luggage around the airport or hotel? Depending on where you are going and how many stops you are making, paying for porters can become a significant part of your travel budget.

4. You can score a free ticket

If your flight is overbooked and you agree to get bumped, you will be rewarded with a ticket for a free flight. Having just a carry on means that getting bumped is less of a hassle, and you won’t have to worry about catching up with your luggage.

5. You’ll save on the transportation itself

With only a little bit of luggage, your travel options increase. Instead of a flight or a car trip, you could take a bus or a train to your destination, carpool with a group or even consider an alternative way of traveling, such as by hiking or bicycle, depending on your destination.
