This week is national procrastination week. It is a time to reflect on what you procrastinate in your life. I thought this was an excellent thing to consider in regards to emergency preparedness and food storage. This is no doubt a result of the fact that it is the area that I manage to procrastinate the most. If you are putting off preparing for a future emergency, now is the time.
As a challenge for March I think that we should focus on getting the technical side of things in order to handle an emergency. The goals this month focus specifically on preparing your family for a family crisis versus a natural disaster.
1) Do you have the right kind of insurance and enough of it? You should have about three times your annual salary in life insurance. You may decide that you want more than that. While you are thinking about insurance, make sure you have adequate home insurance and health insurance. You may also want to include disability insurance.
2) You should establish a living will for you and your spouse. This is an important document that helps people make the decision regarding life support in the case of a serious accident or illness. This is especially important if you have been diagnosed with a serious or chronic illness. This document will not take long to prepare.
3) Additionally you should prepare a will. If you have young children it should include what you want to have happen to them in the event of your death. This is a vital part of being prepared.
4) Finally an important aspect of preparedness is financial preparedness. More people use their food storage due to job layoffs and tough economics times than for any other reason. Put your financial house in order, get out of debt, save money and prepare for the future.
