I wrote earlier today about the organizational binges I go on just before leaving for a business trip. While organizing, cleaning and binging, I also experience the joy of cleaning out old home business files and recycling paper, cleaning things up and freeing up plenty of hard drive space by deleting files. Is there anything that feels as good in a home business operation?
Okay, I admit that a boost in profits or cutting expenses in a painless way feels pretty darn good so maybe that would rank number one. More money is always nice, especially if one does not have to force herself to work too hard for it. BUT, getting the desk and work space neat and tidy and purging out all those old notes, snippets of papers, spreadsheets and such feels mighty good too! Of course, I have to fight back the urge to worry that I might be throwing away that one scrap of paper or that one computer file that I will one day need to find for some important reason. I just take a deep breath and tell myself that the efficiency is more important than indulging the packrat in me.
Making time to periodically clean things out can be liberating and profitable for a small home business. After all, most of us work in pretty confined space and we do not have a lot of storage room—a little bit of clutter and saving everything and anything can get things into a muddled and sluggish state. So, with each trip to the recycling bin, and each drag and click over the little trash can icon, I feel as though my business is being rejuvenated. More space, more room, more organization, and less clutter is a wonderful way to shake up a business and get it back into the efficiency zone.
