A few months ago I wrote about the Food Storage introductory kit that the church had available to purchase through its website. This kit was a great way to start your food storage. The church has now expanded the food that you can order on its website. In addition to the starter kit you can purchase cases of wheat, pinto beans, white rice, and oats. These are great basic foods to have for long term storage.
If you are considering buying these foods for your long-term storage, you should also know how to cook and eat them. Additionally you will want your body to grow use to these foods, so it is important to incorporate these types of foods (whole grains and beans) into your regular diet. This does not necessarily mean use the wheat you have stored, but rather purchase food that is made with whole wheat. The church also has a pamphlet available that offers basic recipes that use these basic foods.
You may save money by picking up the food at one of Church home storage centers (commonly referred to as canneries). The savings per case ranges from $4.00 to $9.00 per case. There are several centers located throughout the United States. You can order the cans already prepared or prepare them yourself at the center. You can find the order form online.
It is important to think about your entire home storage picture. You should store powdered milk and oil in addition to the basics that you can order online. Additionally it is recommended that you store three months of food that you regularly eat. This will help out in emergencies. Do not forget to consider your family’s needs and allergies. It will not do you much good to store wheat if someone in your family is unable to eat it.
