Preparing for Our Spiritual Droughts

The area in which I currently live has been experiencing a severe drought for several months. The supply of drinking water reached dangerously low levels, though things are beginning to look up due to recent rainfall. However, I grew up in Utah, which is basically a desert, and so when they would say we were in drought conditions and I looked outside and saw green grass that was not watered, I scoffed. How could we be in a drought when the grass is naturally green?

Recently the news and politicians have been talking about a mismanagement of the resources. They admit that they do not have a plan in place to protect us when rainfall is less then expected. Actions are now being taken so that conserving water is done on a regular basis, so that we hopefully won’t be in this situation again.

Just as the community and government in this area has taken their resource of water for granted we can take for granted our testimonies for granted. It is important that we work daily to cultivate and preserve testimony of Jesus Christ. It is similar to the parable of the ten virgins and those that had filled their lamps with oil and prepared by bringing extra and those who had not.

As we embrace the gospel fully and apply its teachings to our lives we can be assured of a testimony and hope. The Lord will strengthen us during our trials and we can return to live with Him again. However, it is easy during the good times to look outside our windows and see that everything is green and good, and to let our scripture study and personal prayer slide. By doing this we are failing to manage our resources effectively. We are not building up a store to handle the times when we need to wait with faith for an answer or the times when we doubt the outcome of our decisions. It is important to take the time now to build up our stores.
