Turning Trash into Treasure

ikea desk How would you like a cool desk for your home? Follow the adventures of a friend who calls herself the “Trash Queen” as she turns another found piece of trash into a real treasure for her home.

You may have read about my friend before here in the frugal blog. She is high on creativity when it comes to curb shopping and turning other people’s discards into usable items for her home, from a backyard fireplace made from a headboard to a kitchen table made from a door, the Trash Queen is constantly coming up with something new.

A couple of days ago, I got an e-mail from here all about her latest find. She picked up a nice looking Ikea dresser from the trash. The Leksvik dresser with 7 drawers. As you can see from the photo, it has a nice design to it, with a back ledge and a nice, sturdy look. Unfortunately, the dresser could no longer be used as a dresser. The dresser wouldn’t hold the drawers in place without collapsing on itself. That didn’t stop the Trash Queen, though.

She gutted out the dresser, removing the four middle and bottom drawers and removing any drawer slides. She saved these drawers to use as storage for underneath her bed. Next she removed the top middle drawer to increase the stability of the dresser, reserving the top left and the top right drawers. Again, she used these drawers for storage. She tells me that the beautiful draw pulls on the drawers match nicely with her high victorian bed.

With the removal of the drawers and the “gutting” of the dresser, the piece of furniture has now been turned into a nice Ikea desk for the family! Hmm, do you think I can talk her out of those draw pulls for my kitchen cabinets?
