Summer Road Trip: Cruising the Country

If your family enjoys spending the summer months cruising the countryside in search of unique attractions then you are in luck. Several popular travel destinations are bringing in one-of-kind treasures to their sites this summer in hopes of attracting a record number of tourists.

For example, in St. Paul a rare copy of the Declaration of Independence is coming to the state as part of Minnesota’s 150th anniversary celebration.

The document is the only one of its kind that travels the country. It is often referred to as the “Dunlap Broadsides” and was typed and printed shortly after the handwritten version was signed in 1776.

Minnesota officials say the broadsides were used to declare war, inspire American troops and inform the British government.

The document will be on display at the Minnesota History Center for 12 days beginning May 6th and admission is free.

Meanwhile, in San Francisco the de Young Museum is gearing up to unveil an awe-inspiring exhibit from one of the most popular artists of this era. Dale Chihuly’s first major show in San Francisco will be held at the museum from June 14-September 28. The show will include 11 galleries of new and past works from the artist best known for creating massive glass sculptures.

Museum guests will be able to view Chihuly’s 30-foot yellow neon Saffron Tower at the de Young’s Pool of Enchantment and a 15-foot radiant yellow Sun at the Legion of Honor in the exterior Court of Honor.

According to museum officials, Chihuly’s exhibit will also include chandeliers and towers; the 56-foot-long Mille Fiori garden of glass; and Glass Forest 3, recreating an early white milk-glass and neon work that has not been viewed in this country since 1972.

Finally, in my previous blog I listed travel packages that were designed to get you to spend your tax rebates on fabulous trips to exotic locations. Closer to home The Muse Hotel New York is offering a “Suite Tax Relief” package designed to get you to spend part of your economic stimulus check on a day of pampering.

For $499 the package includes a night in one of the hotel’s suites, a bag of Payday, 100 Grand and Sugar Daddy candies, access to the hotel’s spa, and The Muse won’t bill you for room taxes. The deal is available through May 31.
