Romance on the High Seas (1948)

Romance on the High Seas” was Doris Day’s first film appearance. She stars as Georgia Garrett, a nightclub singer who has always dreamed of world travel. One day, luck finds her in the form of Mrs. Elvira Kent.

Mrs. Kent (Janis Paige) has always suspected her husband of being a cheater, but she can’t prove anything. She decides to make him think she’s gone on a long trip, planning to catch him in the act when he thinks she’s not looking. She asks Georgia to go on the trip in her place, mailing her husband letters from time to time and giving the idea that she’s really enjoying herself on the cruise ship. Meanwhile, she’ll stay home and watch him.

Well, Mr. Kent is suspicious of his wife. She seems awfully eager to go on that trip alone, and he thinks she’s going to meet a man. He hires Peter Virgil, a private detective, to follow her and see if she meets up with any men. Of course, when Peter (Jack Carson) gets on the boat, the woman he follows is really Georgia Garrett, and even though she’s been warned to mind herself, Georgia falls head over heels in love with Peter.

Now Peter feels like a heel. He’s the instrument of bringing the Kent marriage to an end – so he thinks. When Mr. Kent shows up in Rio, ready to intervene, and Mrs. Kent arrives as well, ready to take back her name, they all realize it’s just been one big mistake, and they celebrate against the background of Carnival.

Featuring the song “It’s Magic,” this movie is a fun farce filled with music, dancing, and romance. It’s not hard to see why Doris Day became a film as well as a recording star.

This movie was not rated.
