Earth Day 2008

Is family celebrating Earth Day? If you’d like to, here are some ideas to consider. Earth Day is officially April 22nd. Since that falls on a Tuesday, a lot of organized activities happen this weekend.

A lot of cities are planning clean up the park and clean up river projects. Activities like these are a great chance for the entire family to volunteer together. We’ve also been to several Earth Day events. It’s a great way to learn about things like composting, recycling, growing container gardens, and how to shop locally.

Taking your own bags to the grocery store is a simple thing to do that does help. Here in the United States, we go through about 100 billion plastic shopping bags. That’s a lot of plastic to waste. And that’s also 4 billion dollars worth of plastic bags. I have to say, I love carrying our own bags to the store. They stay upright in the back of the van. No more jars rolling under the sets!

You can buy reusable bags just about anywhere now. But it’s fun to make your own custom ones. Large canvas bags cost only a few dollars at the craft store. We tried to create a special one for the boys’ grandmother with iron-on transfer photo paper. The canvas was really too rough for the details in a photo. Fabric and craft paints work great though. The kids can paint their own designs like the earth, flowers, birds, or recycling messages like “Reuse” or “Save the Planet”.

Even if your city doesn’t have something special happening for Earth Day, don’t let that stop you. You can stage your own yard cleanup day, feed the birds, or take your gloves and trash bags to the park and clean it up. See last year’s blog on Earth Day for more ideas.
