While I often write about the need to shake things up and create new ways of doing things in our home businesses, I also think there is definitely a place for consistency. One of the places that I think our consistency can really pay off in our home businesses is in just showing up—dedicating a certain amount of time and energy every day (or regular working days) to working on our businesses—whether we are doing anything flashy or not—can be the glue that holds our businesses together.
There is something to be said for just staying in the game. Sitting down at your desk every morning or facing your “to do” list, making phone calls, or going to the networking events month after month whether you really want to or not are all ways of continuing to show up. There are things and movement that happen in any endeavor that are only possible by continuous and constant application. I do not know how many times I have discovered something major—not by a purposeful brainstorming session or by reading or trying something new, but just after having showed up and worked at something for a while, the answer comes to me.
I still believe in all those creative ways to generate new ideas and solutions, but I also think that consistency is important. Amazing things happen when a person just continues to show up day after day whether you are playing on a sports team, working at a job, attending a support group or other organization, or working at your home business. Before giving up and throwing in the towel or letting yourself get discouraged, consider just a few more weeks or month of regular attention to your business operations. You might be surprised how things start to fall into place.
