If you are looking for a weekend getaway that includes watching a Grits Queen earn her crown or half naked men competing in belly flop contests then mark your calendars for the following dates:
April 8 – 13, 2008–The first full week in April is when the Arctic Man Ski & Sno-Go Classic gets underway in Summit Lake, Alaska. The majestic beauty of the 49th state serves as the backdrop for the world’s most amazing and thrilling downhill races. The Arctic Man race features snowmobiles and either a skier or a snowboarder towed behind them. The event starts with a skier/snowboarder racing 2 miles through a canyon, then meeting up with the sled and grabbing a tow rope at 60 mph. Then, the two race uphill at speeds of 85 mph, where the towee lets go and races for the finish line.
April 11 – 13, 2008–More than 45,000 people are estimated to attend this year’s World Grits Festival in St. George, South Carolina. The event started in 1986 and has grown into an international affair attracting tens of thousands of spectators and participants. Highlights include a grits-eating competition, corn tossing, corn shelling, and the crowning of “Miss Grits.” The most popular event is the Rolling in the Grits competition, where participants dive into a pool of cold grits. The person who can stick the most grits to their body wins.
April 12, 2008–Each year Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington, New York holds a pond-skimming contest to commemorate the start of spring. Participants try to glide across a pond on skis. The person who makes it across the farthest without falling in the water is the winner. The competition also awards prizes for best costume, biggest belly flop and other fun categories.
April 26, 2008–Each year the Virginia Beach boardwalk hosts the Cruisin’ Virginia Beach Auto & Motorcycle Super Show. This year more than 200 hot rods, classic cars, antique autos, and motorcycles will line the boardwalk, all vying for trophies in various categories.
