I Just Don’t Get It

No matter how much I expose myself to the trappings of Tinseltown I will never understand what goes on in the minds of celebrities.

Case in point: Mariah Carey’s quickie seaside nuptials to Nick Cannon.

The pair got hitched in the Bahamas last week after dating for less than two months.

That in and of itself is not that shocking. In fact, it’s par for the course for most star couples. Heck, if you have a Bahamian estate to escape to and the money to fly in a dozen or so of your closest family members and friends you might get married as quickly as possible too.

Here’s the part I don’t get: Carey appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” less than three weeks prior to tying the knot with Cannon and at the time she swore she was not ready to settle down. Not only did she admit that she wasn’t ready to settle down she flat out lied to Oprah about having a “special someone” in her life. (Yesterday Winfrey told viewers that Carey later told her that she was in love with Cannon but wanted to keep it a secret.)

Now the 38-year-old pop diva is married to her 27-year-old boy toy and (gasp!) is spilling her guts to PEOPLE magazine about how she and Cannon clicked instantly when she cast him as her lover in the video for her new single, “Bye Bye.”

Look, I’m all about stars being discreet about their personal lives so as not to incite media frenzies each time they appear in public. But I think there is a big difference between remaining tight-lipped about a topic and telling an outright lie to deflect attention.

Now that the couple is legal they are going public with their “undying love” for one another:

“From the first time we sat down to discuss the video at the Beverly Hills Hotel, we connected,” Cannon told PEOPLE. “We had so much in common spiritually, and we laugh at the same things. I didn’t have to put on my Mac Daddy suave mode. I was able to be myself with her. We are both eternally 12 years old.”

Nice. But what was with the charades? Believe me the tattoos each got on their bodies weeks before the wedding (Carey’s says, “Mrs. Cannon,” Cannon’s says, “Mariah”) spoke volumes for where the relationship was headed so why try to hide it? Also, regardless of how savvy they think they are I highly doubt any member of the paparazzi could have guessed that Carey and Cannon would head down the aisle so quickly.

In regards to the much-hyped tattoos, Cannon told the magazine, “To me rings are special and exciting, but tattoos mean more than anything. They’re forever and ever. They professed our love.”

Isn’t that what Britney said about the K-Fed tat she got when she got hitched and subsequently got lasered off shortly after their split.

In case you care about the ceremony details, according to the magazine, about a dozen guests attended Carey and Cannon’s sunset wedding, which was followed by a lavish reception featuring Maine lobster and Dom Perignon champagne. The bride wore a form-fitting gown by Nile Cmylo that faded from off-white to pale pink.

As for having kids together, Carey who just 10 days ago told reporters that she had no plans to have children because she didn’t want to “sacrifice” her lifestyle to accommodate young ones, has now changed her tune (yet again).

“It’s part of the whole purpose of getting married,” Carey is now professing. “I’d just want our children to have the best childhood and upbringing they possibly could.”

Hopefully, that includes a lesson about honesty.
