Mexican Getaway

Supermodel Heidi Klum and her family are there right now enjoying a Mother’s Day retreat on its sandy beaches. And Super Bowl superstar Eli Manning just tied the knot there a couple of weeks ago. I’m talking about sunny Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. But you don’t have to make money like a movie star to take a glamorous weekend getaway to the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. Right now several tour companies are offering fabulous savings to Cabo.

For example, Pleasant Holidays is giving travelers the chance to soak up the sun in Cabo for just $613. The price includes round-trip airfare from L.A. (add $44 for Denver; $150 for D.C.; $256 for New York City and $33 for Chicago) and three nights’ accommodations at the luxurious 286-room Hotel Finisterra, located on a seven-acre secluded private beach on the Pacific Ocean. (The catch: You must travel between August 16 and September 28, 2008.)

For $613 you will get a standard room (which includes two double beds and a balcony or patio) at the hotel that overlooks the bay and downtown Cabo. If you want to upgrade to an oceanview room in the more modern section of the hotel you’ll have to pay an additional $33 per person for three nights.

Both sections of the resort feature natural stone and mahogany touches along with Mexican-tile accents. The property also boasts a large outdoor pool, a gym, a boutique, a lounge and a restaurant. In addition, the hotel is located near major attractions, such as the rock formation known as the Arch at Land’s End (El Arco) and downtown Cabo San Lucas.

Other notable local attractions, which are within walking distance of the hotel, are the downtown Cabo San Lucas harbor and Boulevard Mijares, Cabo’s main street that connects Plaza Mijares to the beach area. If you are a history buff you could also consider taking the short drive to the Museo de las Californias and Iglesia de San Lucas (Church of San Lucas), which dates back to 1746.
