Iconic Sex Symbols – Part 1

The other day at 6:00 a.m. (I had to wake hubby up for work), I started watching the The Bounty. That is the recount of the HMS Bounty, a British ship that was overthrown by Fletcher Christian. Normally, when I turn the television on at 6:00 a.m., I immediately go back to sleep, but a young Mel Gibson is good enough reason to stay awake!

That started me to thinking about iconic sex symbols – the men whose good looks will forever be frozen in time. Here are the ones I think were extremely hot in their heyday. Some died young and beautiful, some aged gracefully, and well, some just aged.

Mel Gibson

As I’ve already mentioned, Mel was just absolutely gorgeous when he was filming The Bounty in 1984. That beautiful face, the gorgeous blue eyes, the lean torso, even the long hair just worked for him. The year after the film premiered, Mel was named “The Sexiest Man Alive” by People magazine, the first man to receive this honor.

Unfortunately, I think years of hard living and hard drinking have made Mel looked old before his time, but ah, at least I can always pop in The Bounty to see him in his prime!

Warren Beatty

If you don’t think Warren was the man during his time, just take a look at his long list of female conquests: Joan Collins, Leslie Caron, Madonna, Julie Christie, Liv Ullmann, Brigitte Bardot, Carly Simon (I still think she wrote “You’re so Vain” about Warren), Elle Macpherson, Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn, Candice Bergen, Cher, and Britt Ekland among others.

I personally fell in love with Warren when I saw Bonnie and Clyde. The list for this unapologetic womanizer seemed to never end until Annette Bening finally got her man in 1992. Was Warren tired of the single life or was he just too tired to carry on at that rate? We will never know, but personally, I think his looks have held up well for man who is now 71.

Paul Newman

Oh man, if you can get past dreamy baby blues – ah, never mind, you just can’t get past those. But, if you did have a chance to, the rest of the package was incredible. And, to make it even better – he seems to be a genuinely nice guy. Not only has he been married to his second wife Joanne Woodward for 50 years, but his Newman’s Own line has donated more the $200 million to charity since its inception in 1982.

More iconic sex symbols tomorrow!

I work full-time as a web developer at UTHSC and most of my other time is spent with my son (born 2004). I love everything pop culture, but also enjoy writing about green living (it has opened my eyes to many things!) and health (got to worry about that as you get older!).
