While one long time lesbian couple (Jodie Foster and Cydney Bernard) is rumored to have broken up, another fairly high profile lesbian couple is set to tie the knot.
Cynthia Nixon, who stars as Miranda Hobbs Brady in “Sex and the City,” has revealed that she and her partner Christine Marinoni want to get married. Nixon has never been married, but lived with longtime boyfriend Danny Mozes for 15 years. The couple have two children together – eleven year old Samantha and five year old Charles.
Nixon did not reveal her relationship with Marinoni for a long time, but now has broken her silence. Nixon did not find the switch from male to female was all that strange. Of the relationship with Marinoni, she said, “I had been with men all my life and I had never met a woman I had fallen in love with before. But when I did, it didn’t seem so strange. I don’t define myself. I’m just a woman in love with another woman.” She went on to say, ““I’m in a fantastic relationship. It’s been about four years.”
Nixon and Marinoni met in 2002. At the time, Marinoni was a New York City education activist. Nixon has long been a proponent of the public school system. She herself went to New York City schools. When she enrolled her daughter in a public kindergarten, she found it was quite different from projected due to budget cuts. She decided to get involved with the Alliance for Quality Education.
She recently said that she and Marinoni would marry if the state of New York approves the union. “If it becomes legal, I think we would. It’s something my girlfriend is interested in and it was not something my boyfriend ever was,” she told the New York Daily News. Nixon’s publicist has denied the couple plan to go to Vermont, where same sex marriages are legal.
What do Nixon’s children think of the relationship? She says, “They were fine. My son was very little [when it happened], but my daughter has a gay uncle [and her godmothers] are lesbians.”
