More Wild and Wacky Family Friendly Festivals

With the price of gas skyrocketing to record levels some families are opting to postpone their annual road trips to the end of summer in hopes that the cost of fuel will decrease after the busy Memorial Day weekend. Heck, I know one family who has put the brakes on their summer vacation and instead will be hitting the road in late September for an extended getaway. If you have plans to do the same then you might be interested in purusing the following list of weird and wacky events that will be taking place around the country this fall:

OKLAHOMA

The Cowboy Trade Day in Catoosa, Oklahoma draws tens of thousands of visitors to the area each year. The festival, which was created back in 1995 by a resident who was sick of traditional flea markets, is the site of the largest cowboy, Western, and Native American sale in the United States. The event takes place on September 20, 2008.

CALIFORNIA

How Berkeley Can You Be in Berkeley, California is an annual festival that pokes fun at the city’s laid-back lifestyle. The event includes a jazz festival and parade and seeks to improve the area’s image and sense of community. You can join in on the fun this year on September 28th.

ARKANSAS

The annual Yellville Turkey Trot in Yellville, Arkansas is home to the National Wild Turkey Calling contest. The competition attracts callers of all ages from around the country and has been a staple in the community for more than six decades. During the festival local restaurants cook special turkey dinners while other organizations host a 5K run. There are also dozens of crafts vendors and beauty pageants (the swimsuit one is dubbed Miss Drumsticks). This year the festival takes place from October 10-11.

COLORADO

The Emma Crawford Coffin Races in Manitou Springs, Colorado has a unique history. The race features costumed impersonators of Emma—-a 19th-century woman who was buried atop Red Mountain—-who ride on coffins pulled by teams of four mourners along the city’s main drag. According to the locals, Emma haunts the mountain even though her coffin washed away years after her burial. You can take part in the big race on October 25, 2008.
