Who says you have to travel all the way to Hawaii to experience the beauty of awe-inspiring waterfalls?
Not New York City tourism officials.
According to city leaders, the Big Apple is the place to be if you want to see spectacular waterfalls in unlikely places… like near the Brooklyn Bridge.
Scandinavian artist Olafur Eliasson is creating four manmade waterfalls on the shores of the city’s East River and city officials are hoping tourists will flock to them in the months to come.
The falls will feature water coursing over scaffolding 90 to 120 feet high at tourist friendly locales such as the Brooklyn base of the Brooklyn Bridge, Governor’s Island, Pier 35 in Lower Manhattan, and between Piers 4 and 5 in Brooklyn. The waterfalls will flow from late June to mid-October, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, and will be illuminated after sunset.
You can view the spectacles from numerous public vantage points, including from the Brooklyn and Manhattan waterfront and from the pedestrian path of the Brooklyn Bridge. Otherwise, you can board the Circle Line Downtown (the official boat tour operator for the event) or any a number of other cruises, which will be offering views of the falls, including the New York Water Taxi and Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises.
If you have money to burn you could consider signing up for Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises $50,000 private tour package, which comes complete with champagne, a pair of diamond earrings, dinner for two and a night in a presidential suite.
For families traveling on a budget, a number of hotels, including the Plaza Athenee, Roosevelt and Mandarin Oriental, are offering special travel deals in conjunction with the new waterfalls. For example, the Ritz-Carlton New York at Battery Park, which is located near the falls (and has rooms that overlook the waterfalls), is offering fall packages starting at $480 a night. The price includes accommodations in a luxury room, an in-room telescope, breakfast for two and two boat tour tickets.
