Milkshakes for Breakfast

smoothieWhen my daughter first asked me if she could have a milk shake for breakfast I immediately said no. After all, what good mother would feed her child ice cream for breakfast? Then I thought about it.

First of all, ice cream packs a walloping amount of calcium. Secondly, if you make your own creation from low fat ice cream or frozen yogurt, plus some fruit–it’s certainly no worse than a doughnut (which we do on occasion). So I changed my thinking, and while I can’t say that milkshakes for breakfast are a regular occurrence in our house–it’s within the realm of possibilities for breakfast goodies. I suppose technically, some of these are ‘smoothies’. Call them what you will–they are definitely a favorite in our house.

Buttermilk Smoothie–A perfect combination of sweet and tart!

You will need:

1 cup buttermilk

1/4 cup chilled orange juice

1/4 cup chilled unsweetened pineapple juice

2 tablespoons of sugar

1 teaspoon of lemon juice

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a blender. Process until blended and pour into chilled glasses. Serve immediately.

Strawberry Breakfast Shakes–According to my children, this is the perfect drink to go with waffles.

To make this shake, I actually buy a carton of plain yogurt and freeze it. I think it makes the result creamier–as opposed to adding extra crushed ice to it.

You will need:

1 large carton of plain yogurt, frozen then softened slightly

1 package of frozen, sweetened strawberries

1 cup milk

2/3 cup crushed ice

1 tablespoon of honey

4 whole strawberries, for garnish if your kids care

Directions:

Process first five ingredients in a blender. Serve immediately and top each glass with a sliced strawberry.

Blueberry Smoothie–Don’t let the fact that this uses frozen yogurt fool you into thinking that it’s unhealthy. Packed with blueberries and peaches, this drink makes a great breakfast.

You will need:

1 cup frozen vanilla frozen yogurt

1 cup fresh blueberries

1/2 cup chopped fresh peaches

1/2 cup pineapple juice

1/4 cup low fat vanilla yogurt

Directions: Process all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Serve immediately.
