Senior Missionary Series: What Will I Eat in the Missionary Training Center?

Regardless of age, missionaries, when entering the MTC, wonder what will be on the menu. Young elders might worry that they won’t get enough to eat – those guys can eat like horses. Missionaries with dietary restrictions might worry that their needs won’t be met. No matter what your concerns are with food, there’s an answer at the MTC cafeteria. What will you eat? Whatever you want.

The cafeteria is set up to accommodate a wide variety of tastes and dietary requirements. You’ll find fresh fruits and vegetables, good hearty soups and tasty breads. You’ll also find hamburgers, pizza, and roasts. If you’re trying to eat light, you can do that. If you feel the need to bulk up on calories, you can do that, too. The servings are plentiful, the food is tasty, and you can go back for seconds if you want. You’ll not walk away hungry.

If you do happen to come down with a case of the munchies, though, never fear! There are vending machines with various snacks located here and there throughout the complex. When you check in at the MTC, you are given a card with a bar code on it. That card becomes, literally, your meal ticket. Swipe it at the cafeteria and your meal is paid for. Swipe it in the vending machine and your snack is paid for. Rather, though, I should say it’s “accounted” for—you won’t have to relinquish any money for these food items. It’s all included in your monthly missionary payment, nothing extra added.

Now, I can’t guarantee you’ll be fed this well once you’re out in the mission field. There may be cultural differences in the way food is prepared in your area of labor, and you’ll find that some people just aren’t good cooks. But for the time you’re in the MTC, at least, you’ll eat like kings and queens.
