More Headboard Ideas

The following headboard ideas are going to require a bit more effort and a bit more know how than the last batch. They are still fairly simple, and they will make a big difference in the look and feel of your bedroom.

Upholstered Headboard

This one is pretty easy. Purchase a piece of plywood or medium density fiberboard (MDF). These materials usually come in 4′ x 8′ sheets, so cut it down to size or ask the building supply center to cut it down for you. They will usually take care of it for free or for a minimal charge.

Next, cover the wood with quilt batting. Stretch the batting over the wood and staple it to the back. Stretch a piece of fabric, tapestry, denim, vinyl, or whatever you prefer over the piece and staple this material to the back, making sure to pull the fabric taut with each staple. Hang the piece on the wall behind your bed at the appropriate height, being sure to secure it to studs.

Slipcover Your Headboard

Another option is making a slipcover for an existing headboard. Select fabric that coordinates with your bedding or other furnishings, and purchase a piece large enough to cover your headboard front and back. Slip the fabric over the board, with the “good” side facing in. Pin the fabric in the shape of the headboard, making sure the fabric is pinned snugly. It should take a bit of effort to slip the fabric back off. When you remove the fabric, sew seams along the pinned area, keeping the fabric inside out. After stitching the seams and hemming the piece, turn it right side out. Slip your new cover over your headboard and it will look like a brand new piece of furniture. If your bed also has a foot-board, you may want to slipcover it as well.
