Today started with a drama. Minutes after being let outside our pup started screaming. I rushed out. I found her still shrieking and our other dog looking guilty. It appeared they had an altercation and she came off worse. When I tried to pick her up, she shrieked even louder.
Soon we were in the car, on our way to the vet, with me still in my slippers! The moment we got in the car, our pup started shaking. By the time we reached the vet’s door moments after they opened, our pup was starting to freak out. She knew where she was and she didn’t want to go in.
Sometimes we can be like that with God. We do something we know is wrong and instead of coming back to God and seeking His forgiveness, we pull away. We stop praying and reading our bible. Of course the longer we do this, the worse we feel and the worse the problem gets. We feel we aren’t worthy to come to God. So we pull further away. It doesn’t work.
Like our little pup needed the vet to diagnose the problem and fix her up, we need the help and comfort God gives. We know that He is the only One who can help and heal us but still we baulk at coming to Him.
Once the vet got our pup into the surgery and up on the table, she settled down under the vet’s careful ministrations and soothing voice. It was exactly the place she needed to be where she could be treated and healed.
God’s presence is the place where we can know God’s healing touch. When we come into God’s presence we know we can come confidently because of what Jesus has done for us, Hebrews 10:19. We have His assurance and the soothing words of the Bible. ‘If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness,’ 1 John 1:9. This is one of my favorite verses of the Bible for the words of assurance it gives.
So let us not be afraid or ashamed to some to God but ‘Let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.’ Hebrews 4:16. As we allow God to help us then we are also able to help others.
