Let’s face it; the majority of us exercise because we want to lose weight. Sure, some folks workout to maintain their weight, while others adopt a fitness regime to combat the signs of aging. But the core group of walkers, runners, bikers and swimmers that you see in the gym, on the road and in the pool are trying to burn as many calories as possible.
In my previous blog I provided a list of some of the best calorie burning exercises available. While we all know the best cardio exercise is the one you are motivated to do consistently there are some aerobic activities that burn more calories per minute than others. If you are looking to burn serious calories consider partaking in High Intensity Interval Training exercises like the ones below:
SPRINTING. Sprinting (or running at high rates of speed for a short amount of time) not only burns major calories, it also keeps your metabolism flying for days after. Sprinting can be combined with running or jogging and will still yield amazing results.
JUMPING ROPE. This is one of the simplest, yet most effective exercises someone looking to burn calories can do. In just 15 to 20 minutes, jumping rope will give you an unparalleled total body workout. If you have the motivation to jump rope for 30 minutes at 70 jumps per minute you can burn up to 300 calories (for a 135-pound person). Jumping rope is ideal for cardiovascular endurance and helps to enhance your performance in other sports, including tennis, basketball, football, skiing, and volleyball to name just a few. This simple exercise is also great for eye-hand coordination, lateral movement, foot and hand speed and agility.
SPINNING. This high-intensity workout done primarily in the gym (on a stationary bike) under the direction of a trained instructor simulates a challenging bike ride complete with hills, valleys, and varying speeds. A 130-pound person can look forward to burning 225 calories per 30-minute session if spinning at 9.5 miles per hour.
