Exercise and the “Fat Gene”

Researchers just wrapped up a study that looked into the claim that a common genetic variation exists that makes people more likely to gain weight. The study concluded that there might be a way you can blame being fat on your genes, but even more importantly, researchers discovered that there is a way to combat your family history.

The solution: Exercise.

But, not just any exercise. Researchers say to overcome the predisposition to gain weight a person must engage in three to four hours of moderate activity a day.

Scientists concluded that about 30% of white people of European ancestry (including the Amish, who were the subjects of this particular study) have the fat gene. Interestingly, despite the fact that Amish people are more apt to have the variant, they also live a non-sedentary lifestyle. The Amish community’s 19th century rural lifestyle dictates that they don’t use cars or modern appliances. Many of the men are farmers and carpenters, while the women are homemakers, who also work in the fields and complete a number of labor-intensive chores in the course of the day.

This is not to say that if you have the genetic variant you need to live like the Amish and swear off modern appliances and other technology. Rather, scientists suggest that you increase the amount of physical activity you get on a daily basis. They say you should consider adding things like brisk walking, housecleaning and gardening to your routine and be vigilant about getting exercise.

Researchers say every little bit helps, and that adding an extra few hours of activity daily might not be as hard as it seems. According to scientists, instead of vegging out in front of the TV at night people with the genetic variant should go for a jog, ride a bike or enroll in an aerobics class. To burn additional calories consider taking the stairs instead of elevators and walk more and drive less.
