How special it is to have good friends. Last night, we’d come home from a great night, having dinner at our friends’ house, chatting, laughing and playing a game of Word Rummikub. The evening was basically just enjoying each other’s company. Oh, I forgot singing. My friend and I have the knack of being able to find a song that fits any conversation or situation. That produces its own hilarity. I’d always thought before it was a peculiar trait of our family.I love this quote on Nicole’s blog ‘A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart, and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words.’ – unknown
The fun evening started me thinking about what makes a good friend. Here’s my list.
Someone you can relax and be yourself with. You don’t have to stop and think before you say or do something because they accept you exactly as you are- faults and all. As C S Lewis puts it.‘Eros will have naked bodies; Friendship naked personalities.’
Together you can laugh and talk about the deep things of life and the trivial.
Someone who makes you feel special, who is pleased to see you and misses you when you haven’t seen each other for a while.
She remembers I am on a wheat and gluten free diet and plans dinners accordingly and keeps special biscuits etc on hand for when I visit.
One of the great blessings of having Christian friends is that we can support each other in prayer as well as other practical ways. What a joy this is, for the one praying as well as the one being prayed for.
My dear friend is into art, computer graphics and sewing. I have no skills in any of these areas. She knows nothing about tennis or ‘one end of a football from the other,’ whereas I play tennis twice a week and I’m passionate about watching football (AFL – Aussie football) and the Sydney Swans. None of that matters. Together we enjoy things like live theater, playing games and just getting together.
We’re alike enough in the things that really matter in life, which means our beliefs in the importance of God and family.
We both admit there are certain things in life we ‘don’t do’ – like church camps. (But that’s another blog yet to be written!)
I know if I need help any time I can call on our friends and they on us.
People say it’s hard to make friends later in life. We’ve found the opposite. In just over twelve months since we moved we have made such good friends as my dear friends puts it ’friends we will spend glory with.’
What do you think makes a good friend?
