It may well be the most twisted example of irony parents experience each year: Interrupting a perfectly gorgeous summer day to go back-to-school shopping. And while the chore could be completed in September, waiting to the last minute typically results in nervous breakdowns that could have been avoided had you just gotten out of the pool and into Target in August.
In addition to purchasing school supplies, it’s a good idea to check off some other back-to-class tasks, such as reviewing safety rules with your kids.
Here are some reminders to get you started:
TRAVELING TO AND FROM SCHOOL
Walking:
*If your child walks to and from school make sure he follows a safe route that includes adult crossing guards at every intersection.
*Consider walking with your child, especially if your kid’s pedestrian skills are questionable. If your son or daughter is impulsive and not cautious around traffic, then you might consider accompanying him/her to and from school.
*Bright colored clothing and reflectors will make your child more visible to drivers.
Biking:
*Make sure your child always wears a bicycle helmet, no matter how short or long the ride.
*Teach your child to ride on the right side of the street, in the same direction as traffic.
*Teach your child how to use appropriate hand signals and how to respect traffic lights and stop signs.
School Bus
*If your child’s school bus is equipped with lap/shoulder seat belts, make sure he uses one at all times when in the bus.
*Teach your child that he must wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching it. Also, have him check to see that no other traffic is coming before boarding the bus.
*Teach your child to remain seated on the bus and not to engage in horseplay.
