Joy in the Heart

This week Mick and I saw ‘Little House on the Prairie’ DVDs advertised on sale. What I always loved about this show was the way Christian faith was lived out in daily lives in a simple and honest way. ‘Little House on the Prairie’ also brings back memories as it was a show we watched regularly with our family.

Some time back we’d bought series 1 and 2 but not the rest. This week we could only buy series 3. The others were sold out. Obviously we’re not the only ones who like it.

As we watched, I said to Mick, ‘I’d almost forgotten how much I liked this show.’ I suspect you’re going to get more than a passing reference in blogs every now and then.

One episode features Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. With his face as craggy as The Three Sisters, (an Aussie landmark in the Blue Mountains,) he looks exactly the of Caleb Hodgekiss, a guy struggling with hard times and looking for an easy option, even if that means robbing others.

When he finds Reverend Alden injured and takes him home a plan forms in his mind to pose as Brother Hodgekiss, and take the gifts which the Reverend intended to collect from the people of Walnut Grove.

Without spoiling the ending I will simply say, of course, things don’t go to plan.

The song ‘In the Garden,’ features in this episode. This song was made famous by Merle Haggard but I’ve ever heard this version. I have it on two CDs- ‘My Mother’s Hymn Book’ by Johnny Cash and the other ‘Take my Hand – 20 Gospel Favorites’ by Elvis. I love both versions though have to say I’m partial to the Elvis version, but I was always an Elvis fan.

They are both CDs I often listen to when in the car and sing along. But it’s the words that get me. It’s all about the relationship between a believer and his or her Lord and that feeling of joy and belonging that relationship gives. Can you relate to this joyous experience, this joy that passes all understanding? I can.
