Seventeen days and counting until ghosts and ghouls come knocking. Are you ready? If you are planning a Halloween Monster Bash to celebrate the haunted holiday you might consider adding these simple yet scrumptious treats to your menu.
Both were served at my daughter’s playgroup Halloween luncheon last year. Each mom was given a Halloween-themed recipe from a magazine, cookbook or newspaper and asked to make it as creepy as possible. In the end the buffet table was filled with Tombstone Brownies, Pumpkin Face Pizzas, and ghost, pumpkin, bat, bone and cat shaped peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (using cookie cutters).
Here are a few other frighteningly flavorful dishes that will delight your little devils this Halloween:
JUMBO MONSTER MOUTH PASTA
Ingredients:
1 teaspoon vegetable oil
1 medium onion, chopped
4 slices bacon, chopped
1 pound ground beef
2 medium plum tomatoes, seeded and chopped
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
4 slices American cheese, chopped
1/2 package of jumbo pasta shells (about 18 shells), cooked and drained
Baby carrots, olives, bell peppers, small pickles or cheese slices for decoration
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a 13-by-9-inch baking dish.
Heat oil; add onion and bacon. Cook until onion is tender. Add beef; cook and stir about 5 minutes. Stir in tomato, salt and pepper, then cheese.
Spoon mixture into cooked shells. Place in baking dish. Bake 3-5 minutes or until hot.
Cut carrots into very thin strips. Poke ends into the olives and attach to shells to make bulging eyeballs. Cut peppers or cheese into fangs and use pickles as tongues.
FREAKY PIZZA BITES
Ingredients:
4 English muffins
Pizza sauce
Mozzarella cheese
Pepperoni
Green onion, red peppers, olives, mushrooms, etc. to decorate
Directions:
Cut English muffins in half.
Spread pizza sauce over the muffins and sprinkle with cheese.
Cut pepperoni, peppers, green onion, olives and mushrooms to create pumpkin faces or monster faces.
Short Cut: Use a frozen or take-out full-size cheese pizza and decorate it to save time.
