Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away; do you know where you’ll be gobbling up turkey this year? More importantly, what fun family activities do you have planned for the long holiday weekend besides stuffing your face?
A few million Thanksgiving diners will be heading out to the streets of New York prior to chowing down on turkey and all the trimmings. The massive crowds are just part of the biggest Turkey Day event in the country—-Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. At 9 a.m. sharp on November 27th, more than 10,000 Macy employees and volunteers will gather at 77th and Central Park West to begin their march down Broadway. Event organizers predict that approximately 3 million spectators will brave the elements to watch this year’s spectacular procession filled with colorful floats, marching bands, and giant helium balloons, in person.
For a different take on Thanksgiving, consider heading to Arizona. Dozens of cities across the state celebrate the traditional dinner between Pilgrims and Indians in style. In between the turkey and stuffing you can teach your children about America’s original inhabitants in a state where ruins and reservations hold living tribute to the nation’s Native American past.
Phoenix is home to historic gems such as the Heard Museum, which boasts a stunning collection of Native American art and archaeology that highlights works by Navajos, Hopis, and Apaches, many of whom still reside on nearby reservations. Phoenix is also home to the legendary Apache Trail, a 40-plus-mile route marked by awe-inspiring scenery and ancient Indian ruins. Meanwhile, neighboring Scottsdale offers family-friendly attractions such as the Western-themed Old Town Scottsdale and museums that showcase Navajo rugs and other symbols of Native American heritage.
In Scottsdale you can also find some of the country’s most luxurious spas. Mom will really have something to be thankful for this holiday after she gets smothered in an adobe clay body mask or exfoliated with a cactus and aloe moisturizer.
