Growing Love

As I wrote in another blog the other day, I don’t know if it’s the season or what but I’m more in love with Wayne than ever. Which feels really nice considering earlier this year we were facing a marriage crisis.

This morning I told him, “I don’t know how it’s possible that after 20 something years my love for you just keeps getting stronger, but it does.”

I’ve sort of been thinking about that for the rest of the day so far. And since it’s so much on my mind, I figured that’d make something good to write about today.

Not that I’m complaining I’m still in love with my husband after all these years. I know quite a few people who can’t say that about their spouses and they haven’t even been together as long as we have.

No, I’m thrilled I love Wayne so much. I’m thrilled that instead of fading, my feelings for him keep expanding.

That’s kind of a key word, “expanding.” It reminds me of lessons I’ve learned this year from certain modern sages like Dr. Wayne Dyer and Joel Osteen. In a nutshell, they both advocate that what you think on grows.

Maybe that’s the key. If I think on it, those times when I find myself unhappy with Wayne are the times when I focus on the negative. The more I stew about what he’s not doing, the more angry I get.

But when I step back (read that as: when I blow up and he puts me in my place by pointing out the good he’s done), and I wake up to the fact I’m being too critical, or expecting him to read my mind, or I’m just plain PMSing and looking for a fight, my heart opens up to receiving love again.

Ah, that’s another critical concept, having a heart that’s open to love. You have to let it in in order to receive it. It might sound common sensical but you’d be surprised how many people close themselves off.

So I guess what I’ve realized today is that, like money, love doesn’t grow on trees. But it does grow once planted, and, once rooted, continues producing as long as it’s tended to.
